Liposuction, or liposculpture, is the removal of excess body fat through very small ‘stab wound’ incisions. Fluid is then placed in the fatty area to ‘blow up’ the fat cells and then cannulas(big needles) are placed through those hole incisions and the fat is sucked out. Liposculpture is liposuction with the end result being the sculpting of the body. Therefore this term is an oximoron because all liposuction should result in the sculpting of the body. The procedure can be performed on the abdomen, hips, waist, buttocks, thighs, neck, areas of the back, and extremely rarely, the upper arms and calves. The procedure is performed in a surgery center, under general anesthesia, and lasts between 1-3 hours. Short term recovery is 3 days to one week. There are stitches which are removed one week after surgery and a garment is worn for 2-3 weeks. The risks and complications, are bleeding and infection, which I have yet to encounter. Most patients go down in size by 1-3 sizes, and are extremely happy.
